Otter Cases - Defender Otterbox Cases and Commuter Otterbox Cases for the iPad

By

Otterbox cases, or Otter cases as they are sometimes called, are well known for the superior protection they provide to cell phones and other personal electronic devices. It is no surprise then that their iPad casing options from the Defender and Commuter series of Otterbox cases are among the most popular iPad casing products.

The Otterbox Defender iPad Case is very possibly the safest, most protective iPad case on the market, and the Otterbox Commuter iPad Case is a close second. Both of these Otterbox cases are hybrids, featuring a thin silicone layer and a separate polycarbonate layer, bringing you impact protection of a class far beyond that of most iPad cases.

And they look good while doing it! Matte black and a slim profile with protected cutouts for the Apple logo provide a sleek and classy look that perfectly complements the iPad itself.

Reviews are below, with everything you need to know about these great Otter cases. I've also included installation videos so you can get a good look at what these best-selling cases are all about. The screen protector that's included with both of these cases can be difficult to apply like most screen protectors, so a video that will hopefully simplify that process is included here as well further down.

So take a look. If you're seeking high-grade protection for your unmarred iPad, one of these rugged, heavy-duty but slim profile Otterbox cases may be just the thing.

Otterbox iPad Defender Case

The iPad Defender Case is an innovative three-part case offering superb protection for the iPad in a fully functional case. The case begins with a thin, 2 piece slider hard case which is lined with felt on the inside so the slider function does not scratch your case. Over this a silicone wrap is applied.

The silicone wrap -like the hardcase beneath it- wraps completely around each edge of the iPad, providing a slight lip over the front of the tablet to protect the iPad's touchscreen. There is an Otterbox iPad screen protector included with the Otterbox Defender, providing complete scratch and abrasion protection for the touchscreen in addition.

But wait! There's more, as the saying goes.

The Otterbox Defender iPad case has a polycarbonate cover for the face of the iPad too. It can be snapped onto the back of the iPad case when the iPad is in use, or quickly and easily taken off and reattached to cover the front of the iPad when not in use. This gives you complete, all-around Otterbox protection for your iPad, perfect for travel, commuting or backpack storage or iPad usage in busy, dangerous or unpredictable environments such as worksites and classrooms.

It gets even better!

The removable polycarbonate cover doubles as a sturdy horizontal iPad viewing stand while silicone grips on the outside of the cover keep the iPad safe and secure whether in stand mode or lying flat on a slick surface. The iPad Defender Otterbox case provides complete access to all ports, controls and features through play-through buttons that work easily and a silicone tab plug for the earphone and microphone jacks. Precise cutouts allow for unfettered speakers still protected by the surrounding case. You get all of this ultimate protection and super functionality plus a removal back panel that allows you to dock the iPad incase on the Apple iPad Dock or the Keyboard Dock.

I'm not sure there's much more you could ask for!

The case is ruggedly good-looking, but sleek and slim. A circle cutout covered with thin plastic allows the Apple logo on the back of the iPad to show through, and though a bit of weight is added to the otherwise super-light iPad, the profile of the device in the Otterbox Defender case is still pretty slim.

If what you seek is a highly protective and functional iPad case that safely and easily goes anywhere, the Otterbox iPad Defender Case is the case for you. Though a bit expensive at retail, you can get fantastic savings on Amazon, for both the Defender case and the cover-less Commuter Otterbox case shown below.

Otter Cases Commuter iPad Case

The iPad Commuter Otterbox Case is designed with a similar concept to the Defender case. On the Commuter the silicone wrap goes on first, followed by a snap-on hard shell, which is admittedly a bit more difficult to apply than simply snapping on.

The silicone wrap features a tab-plug over the earphones and microphone jacks, and it does take a bit of effort to place the hardcase over that top edge of the iPad. Neither the Commuter case nor the Defender iPad case will be cases you can quickly and easily remove from and reattach to the iPad, but once in place both of these Otter cases work great and provide excellent protection.

A bit less protection with the Commuter case, however, as it does not have the face cover attachment that the Defender case offers. You do still get a screen protector, like with the Defender, and combined with the double layer of protection that the 2-piece hybrid shell case brings, you're still getting good, all-over protection for your iPad.

All controls, ports and features are accessible like in the Defender case, and there is the easily removable back panel which allows docking. Silicone edges do still show on this case, which may prove too frustrating for iPad users in high pet-hair environments. This is the only drawback on either of these great Otterbox cases.

Back on the long and varied plus side, the protected cutout for the Apple logo is included in the Commuter as in the Defender. The black matte finish adds grip and a subtle sleekness, for an overall understated look.

All in all, the Otterbox Commuter case for the iPad is a perfect choice for someone seeking the protectiveness of the Defender case, but who doesn't feel a need for the convertible face-cover/stand feature. Reduced Amazon prices for both of these iPad Otterbox cases are now happily quite affordable considering all that they offer.

Of course, they always make this look so much easier in the videos, and you know that guy practiced this at least a dozen times before they filmed, but a couple of tricks shown here might be useful.

Dust is always the killer. Strive seriously for a dust and lint-free environment. Lay the screen protector down slowly and gently, almost dropping it onto the iPad touchscreen. Do not press it down into place. Squeegee it gently but firmly. Carefully remove the top layer utilizing the tabs as shown.

Hah, lol. She was funny.

Thank you! Sarcasm seems to work for me.

You got banned for that? Three little posts? I don't see why honestly. Only one of them could possibly have been construed as ban-worthy, but given the context you were merely answering her question. People who invite ridicule and public shame shouldn't get bent out of shape when it's given.

I don't think you should have been banned for answering her question. But for some dumb-butt reason noone will ever let me make the rules. :-(
